Phillies 3B Placido Polanco

October 28 Philadelphia Daily News:

“Third baseman Placido Polanco will have surgery on his left elbow tomorrow and is expected to be ready for spring training, the Phillies said yesterday.

Polanco will have bone fragments removed from the elbow and have the extensor tendon repaired. The surgery, which was expected, will be performed by team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti.

“The recovery time for this procedure is typically 8 to 10 weeks and we fully expect Placido to be ready by spring training, but we’ll know more after the surgery,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said in a statement.

Polanco had four cortisone shots this season, the last on the final weekend of the regular season. Still, he was one of the Phillies’ most consistent hitters and batted .298 with 52 RBI and 76 runs despite being limited to 132 games by the elbow condition.

During the postseason, he hit .207 with four runs and five RBI.

Before the National League Championship Series, Polanco said the elbow was 100 percent, with this caveat: “But if I swing a certain way, or I hit [the elbow], it goes back to maybe 70 or 60 percent. It depends on how hard you aggravate it.””
