“After missing three straight games with a bruised foot, shortstop Jimmy Rollins returned to the Phillies’ lineup Friday night as the team opened a three-game set against the Nationals.
Rollins fouled a pitch off his left foot in the second inning Monday against Colorado, but X-rays found no break. He said the foot was particularly sore the following day, but swelling has been minimal.
By Thursday he was feeling much better, but manager Charlie Manuel wanted to provide Rollins with one more day of rest before seeing how fully the shortstop had recovered.
“He needed to do some running and move laterally and then go in and hit from both sides of the plate,” Manuel said before Friday’s game. “He’s ready to go. He was close (Thursday).””
