October 3 Philadelphia Inquirer:
“If he was running without apprehension, Jimmy Rollins would have easily beaten Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy to first base on his infield grounder in the third inning Friday night.
But the Phillies‘ shortstop was taking no chances with his fragile right hamstring. So he put on the brakes. After all, the postseason begins Wednesday, and Rollins is saving any risky business with his leg until then.
“If I get hurt in the playoffs, then that’s the way it is,” said Rollins, who has missed 74 games this season because of leg injuries, including two stints on the disabled list. “But there’s no reason to do it right now. Save it.”
While insisting Rollins was fine, manager Charlie Manuel noticed that Rollins was taking no chances with his leg.
“When he ran he was leery of letting go,” Manuel said. “I think he could have beaten that pitcher to the bag when he’s running good.”
Rollins gave the Phillies a more encouraging sign Saturday, when he smoothly ran out a double in the Phils’ 7-0 win.
“He’s getting better. He’s getting to play, getting some at-bats, doing some running.”
If Rollins is to salvage his difficult season, he’ll have to do it in the playoffs. He tends to shine brightest on the big stage. Still, it’s possible he won’t be in his customary leadoff spot.”
