Phillies ace Cole Hamels

Would Amaro really trade Cole Hamels to the Blue Jays?

According to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, citing major league sources, the Blue Jays have talked to the Phillies about a potential trade for Phillies ace Cole Hamels and centerfielder Shane Victorino.  Both will be free agents after the season.

That’s one way to shake up a last place club.  It would also be incredibly stupid and a slap in the face to every fan that helps sell out Citizens Bank Park every game and the millions more whose support allows the team to spend damn near like the Yankees.

Luckily Rosenthal clarifies that no trade is close or even likely.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., who arguably is responsible for this team’s mess regardless of injuries to Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, seems to be enjoying creating fan rage.

“My job is to keep all lines of communication open, for the good of the club today and tomorrow,” Amaro said. “I can’t shut any doors down. You try to be creative. And there are a lot of creative GMs out there who have different goals.”

As noted by Rosenthal, Amaro spoke to CSNPhilly’s Jim Salisbury on Thursday, fanning the trade flames.

“If we continue to play like this and keep dropping out of the race, it’s going to be tough to be buyers,” Amaro said. “The one way we can be buyers is by keeping our heads above water — if we’re five games out, seven games out, within striking distance, then yeah.

“But if a couple of teams pull away, run away with this thing and we’re not up to the task, then you never know. Sometimes you can be buyers and sellers at the same time. That situation might present itself, too.

“I don’t expect us to be in a seller’s mode. But I also have to be realistic. If the team decides it doesn’t want to play the way we expect to play or play the caliber of baseball necessary to win, you can’t squeeze blood from a stone.”

Here’s to hoping Howard and Utley can magically return to save the team from Amaro’s ongoing flirtations with ineptitude.
