The Phillies have announced that slugging first baseman Ryan Howard is being placed on the 15 day Disabled List, citing a “moderate sprain” to his left ankle.

Howard was injured trying to get back to second base during a play in Sunday’s game against the Nationals.

To replace Howard on the active roster, the Phillies have recalled outfielder John Mayberry Jr. from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.  Mayberry has shuttled back and forth from Lehigh to the big leagues these past two seasons.  This season for the Iron Pigs, Mayberry is hitting .258 with 12 homers and 54 RBIs for the IronPigs.

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. indicated that Mayberry has been taking groundballs at Lehigh, implying that playing first base is an option for the young outfielder.
