A look at some of the Phillies’ former prospects

The Phillies may have a recent World Series championship under their belts, as well as one of the best rotations in the history of Major League Baseball, but you don’t get either without making a few sacrifices. Over the past three seasons, Philadelphia has seen its beloved baseball team trade away some of the once-known “centerpieces” of what has been a strong farm system for several years.

Roy Halladay may have been worth every penny spent and player traded away, but he didn’t come cheap. Nor did Roy Oswalt and neither did Joe Blanton. Once known as an “untouchable,” Kyle Drabek is no longer with the Phillies. Once referred to as the top Phillies prospect in the minors, Carlos Carrasco is now with Cleveland and performing better than any other player sent away by Pat Gillick and Ruben Amaro Jr. in the last three years.

Below are the numbers of the prospects that were traded away to opposing MLB teams in order to retain the services of Halladay, Oswalt and Blanton.

Carlos Carrasco: In 2011…7-4 with a 3.62 ERA and 1.21. WHIP, 87 inn, 53 K, 23 BB.  Last 4 starts: 3-1, 29.2 inn, 0.61 ERA, 0.58 WHIP, 21 K, 5 BB

Jason Knapp: 22 starts in the minors since being traded. 2-2, 58 1/3 inn, 25 ER, 106 K, 32 BB in 2009-10. Ridiculous K/9 inn ratio. Hasn’t played in 2011. Had season-ending shoulder surgery last week, apparently.

Lou Marson: 129 games, 389 AB, 3 HR, 33 RBI, .208 AVG., 9/11 SB, 24 2B, 2 3B, 6 errors.

Kyle Drabek: 17 GS, 4-8, 5.52 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 60 K, 57 BB in 89.2 inn. Opponents: 11 HR/.285 avg.

Josh Outman: 26 G, 22 GS, 8-4, 3.52 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 88 K, 46 BB in 127.2 inn. Opponents: 12 HR/.242 avg.

Jason Donald: (All in 2010)…88 G, 296 AB, 4 HR, 24 RBI, .253/.312/.378/.690, 5/6 SB, 19 2B, 3 3B, 70 SO, 22 B.

Adrian Cardenas: (2011 in AAA Sacramento, PCL)…68 G, 252 AB, 3 HR, 27 RBI, .321/.396/.425/.821, 4/6 SB, 15 2B, 1 3B, 23 SO, 30 BB.

Michael Taylor: (2010-11 in AAA Sacramento, PCL)…161 G, 601 AB, 14 HR, 103 RBI, 32 2B, 6 3B, 20/28 SB. .272 avg. and .348 OBP in 464 AB in ’10, .292 avg. and .353 OBP in 137 AB in ’11.

Travis D’Arnaud: (2011 in AA New Hampshire)…53 G, 189 AB, 8 HR, 24 RBI, .296/.373/.508/.881, 16 2B, 0 3B, 0/1 SB, 40 SO, 18 BB. Pre-2011: Rated #36 prospect.

Jonathan Villar: (In A/AA)…..243/.326/.711, 5 HR, 32 RBI, 38 R, 24 SB (20 years-old).

Anthony Gose: (AA)…..245/.366/.709, 5 HR, 31 RBI, 39 R, 34 SB (20 years-old).

Matthew Spencer: (2011, AA): 69 G, 227 AB, 12 HR, 46 RBI, 40 R, 18 2B, 2 3B, .282/.353/.537/.891, 4/5 SB, 19 BB, 55 strikeouts.
