“Chase Utley showed up today without a splint on his hand. But that doesn’t mean he’s close to returning. Utley said he isn’t allowed to hit or throw until he sees the doctor again next week. Until then, he’s doing strengthening and range of motion exercises for his right hand, which has been in either a cast or splint since his surgery July 1. Utley has taken ground balls for the past few weeks and recently starting soft-tossing balls, but nothing serious.
Assuming he gets clearance next week to start swinging a bat and throwing, it’ll probably be another couple weeks before he’s ready to return. Utley said he hopes to return by the end of August, which would be right at 8 weeks, the original prognosis.
“I’m glad it’s gone,” Utley said about the splint. “I’m extremely eager to get back. I’ve been going nuts on the bench.””
