“Ross Gload’s right groin strain isn’t serious enough to make him the 16th Phillies player on the disabled list this season, but it still caused a few roster moves the team did not expect to make Thursday.
Shane Victorino was about to leave for the ballpark Thursday afternoon – that is, Coca-Cola Park in Allentown for his third and final triple-A rehab game – when he received a phone call from assistant general manager Scott Proefrock. The Phillies activated Victorino (left abdominal strain) from the disabled list in order to have an extra position player on the bench with Gload temporarily sidelined.
That meant lefthander Antonio Bastardo was optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley only two days after being recalled. At that time, the Phillies had stressed the importance of having two lefties in the bullpen. Other needs superseded that luxury.”
