“With 13 players under contract for next season and 12 on their roster at the Orlando Pro Summer League, the 76ers are not exactly a team of opportunity for the hopefuls who are in camp.
Shooting guard Ryan Brooks (Temple) and forward Vernon Goodridge (La Salle) are among the first-year players who are trying to show new coach Doug Collins that they are deserving of an invitation to the Sixers’ preseason camp this fall.
The team has been going through one-hour workouts on game days this week under Collins’ direction.
“The coach wanted competition, and that’s what he’s got,” Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski said Wednesday during a teleconference. “Doug has thrown a lot at the guys early.”
Stefanski said the team was likely to fill the 14th spot on its roster with a big man. While the player who gets that job may not be with the team now, among the candidates currently are the 6-foot-9 Goodridge, 6-9 Jason Love, 6-11 Trent Plaisted, 6-9 Cedric Simmons, and 6-9 Ndudi Ebi, a second-year player who came out after playing his high school ball in Texas.”
