“While Joselio Hanson said he doesn’t like to see anyone hurt, he seemed giddy to assume injured starter Asante Samuel’s spot at right cornerback on Monday.

“I feel good out there with the ones,” Hanson said. “I always have and I don’t want anybody to get hurt, but it’s cool being out there with those guys.”

Hanson, who has played a mix of nickelback and corner in his three seasons in Philadelphia, wants to be a starting corner at some point.

“Of course,” Hanson said. “I feel like I can be a starter in this league.”

Samuel sat out for the second straight practice Monday with what Eagles officials called a hamstring spasm. His status is day-to-day.

Hanson appeared to leap on the opportunity. In the early practice, Hanson nabbed a Kevin Kolb pass for a pick on an attempted out route.

He wouldn’t admit to being in competition for a job, though.

“I’m not really thinking about it. I’m just trying to get better every day and if I’m called on, I’ll be ready to go.”

Hanson was suspended for four games of the 2009 season for use of a diuretic. Many thought he struggled after his return in December.

“I felt good out there playing in those games,” Hanson said. “I thought I played all right. But I’m expecting a good bounce back year for me.”

The arrival of secondary coach Dick Jauron could be a catalyst for Hanson’s improvement. Jauron, a former head coach in Buffalo and Chicago, is widely respected in many coaching circles.

“He’s just very real with us,” Hanson said. “He tells us how it is. That’s the best coach you can have.”

Hanson, however, will most likely return to his role as a nickelback when Samuel returns. The Eagles swiped Samuels away from the Patriots in free agency two years ago. He has been solid for Reid & Co.

“I’m just going to go out there and play my game,” Hanson said.

Demanding Sims

Ernie Sims always expected a lot out of himself.

Now that he has come to a franchise where nothing short of a deep postseason run is satisfactory, the team’s expectations match his personal demands.”
