Eagles DE Victor Abiamiri

Abiamiri can't avoid the injury bug; career likely over

After setting the world on fire with a Madden-style spending spree, reality is biting back a bit for the Eagles.  As if dealing with the tragic Mike Patterson seizure situation yesterday wasn’t enough, regular old football injuries and other drama are starting to hit.

Hard luck defensive end/tackle Victor Abiamiri is in a walking boot and on crutches.  Eagles head trainer Rick Burkholder isn’t talking and Abiamiri himself doesn’t seem to even be on site at camp anymore.

Today WIP’s Howard Eskin reported that Abiamiri has a torn ACL, but that has seen been refuted by some of the beat writers.  It’s now sounding like a ruptured achilles.  Nothing officially announced yet.

Either way, it looks pretty serious.  Abiamiri was a second-round pick out of Notre Dame and was expected to really bring a solid if not flashy presence at the end position but that’s never panned out.  To say he’s been injury-plagued is an understatement.  In four seasons, he’s played in 29 games, and probably played hurt in some of those.  When he was healthy, he never really did much.

Abiamiri’s Eagles and football career is likely over.

Speaking of ending careers, it sounds like second-year defensive end Ricky Sapp has quit on the Eagles and football.  The Eagles have placed Sapp on the Reserved/Left Squad list as he has left camp.  No one knows why and the Eagles haven’t released any details.

Sapp missed all of his rookie season with a knee injury sustained in camp last year.  Before the injury he had left the Eagles at one point during last year’s camp, only to return shortly thereafter.  It sounds like his heart just isn’t in it.

Originally projected as a first-round pick likely to land with a 3-4 team as a rush linebacker, Sapp surprisingly fell the fifth round, where the Eagles pounced.  They tried him at end at first, then ill-advisedly tried to move him to strongside linebacker in their 4-3.  When that failed they moved him back to end.  He was hurt and gone not long after.  Now it sounds like he’s gone for good.

While losing depth in camp is never a good thing, the reality is that both players were long shots to even make the team.
