Flyers’ loss to Blue Jackets is a no-brainer

October 26 Philadelphia Daily News:

“Peter Laviolette dubbed it mindless hockey.

Ville Leino called it emotionless.

Chris Pronger said it was more disappointing than frustrating.

– save for a solid effort from goalie Brian Boucher.

Make no mistake, the tight score was misleading. The Flyers were outplayed by the Blue Jackets from the drop of the puck.

“We got exactly what we deserved,” Laviolette said. “It’s completely frustrating. You don’t show up and compete, you don’t execute, you don’t play the game with energy and emotion, you’re going to lose. All the time. That’s what happened.”

It was the Flyers’ third straight loss against a backup goaltender. They have posted just four goals in consecutive losses against the Blue Jackets’ Mathieu Garon, Anaheim’s Curtis McElhinney and Pittsburgh’s Brent Johnson.

With little sustained pressure in the offensive zone – and just 17 shots through the first 40 minutes – the Flyers didn’t even make it tough on Garon until the third period, when Leino cut Columbus’ 2-0 lead in half with 5 minutes to go.

Flyers will test back-to-back stamina

October 26 Philadelphia Inquirer:

“When they have faced the Flyers, opponents haven’t had many problems playing their second game in back-to-back nights.

Three teams have been in that predicament against the Flyers – Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and Anaheim. All three shrugged off the fatigue factor and recorded wins.

Now, after a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday, it’s the Flyers‘ turn to test their early-season conditioning.

On Tuesday, they will play their second game in as many nights when they host well-rested Buffalo (3-5-1), which has not played since a 6-1 win at New Jersey on Saturday.

Last season, the Flyers were 10-6 in the first games of back-to-back nights; they were just 7-9 in the second games.”

Burish regrets cheap shots about Flyers’ Pronger

October 26 Philadelphia Daily News:

“Adam Burish wanted to make amends. At least before his Dallas Stars head to town on Feb. 5 and he was have to face Chris Pronger himself.

Just after Patrick Kane clinched the Stanley Cup for Chicago, Burish did an on-ice interview with a Chicago TV station.

“I think Chris Pronger’s the biggest idiot in the league,” Burish told NBC. “I can’t stand him one bit. I hope I never have to see him again. If I see him out there, I might punch him.”

Burish was then asked if he had seen the unprofessional Chicago Tribune poster that depicted Pronger in a skirt, calling him “Chrissy Pronger.”

“No, but that’s perfect,” Burish said. “He should have worn that out here [on the ice]. He was terrible.”

That would be classless from any winner – let alone Burish, who was a healthy scratch in Game 6. He watched his teammates earn him a ring from the press box before running down to the locker room to put on all of his equipment and soak his hair to blend in with the celebration.

Burish signed with Dallas in the offseason and apparently grew up a little bit. He apologized Sunday night in an interview on the NHL Network. “You know what? I said some stupid things I probably shouldn’t have after that game,” Burish told the NHL Network’s David Amber. “It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing and I’m not gonna sit and make an excuse about it. I’ve got a lot of respect for the guy. I think he’s a Hall of Fame defenseman, one of the best that’s ever played the game.”
