“Veteran right wing Bill Guerin makes no bones about it — he wants to be a Flyer.
It’s why he was scrimmaging with 30 other players at the SkateZone on Thursday and why he’ll be back on the ice today before the Flyers‘ prospects take over the SkateZone for a weeklong camp beginning Sunday.
“Right now I’m just kind of skating and being around the guys,” Guerin told the Courier-Post after a 50-minute scrimmage Thursday. “This is a team I would definitely like to play for, but we’ll see.”
With the start of training camp one week away, the Flyers have 23 players under contract and are just $877,000 below the NHL’s $59.4 million salary cap. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren declined comment when asked if anticipates offering Guerin a tryout contract.
“He’s in a tough position right now, I understand that,” said Guerin, who has played 17 NHL seasons and will turn 40 in November.
A year ago, Holmgren offered free agent Blair Betts a tryout contract and the 30-year-old center was signed to a one-year, $550,000 contract one day before the start of the regular season. He parlayed that opportunity into a two-year, $1.4 million deal with the Flyers.
Guerin, who recorded 21 goals and 24 assists in 78 games with the Penguins last season, made $2 million last season and would need to accept far below that figure if the Flyers hope to stay under the cap.
“I don’t know what it’s going to be,” Guerin said of his contract request, “but it’s something I’m very flexible on.”
Several Flyers veterans said Thursday that Guerin’s experience and offensive prowess would be a welcome addition to the 2010-11 roster, if Holmgren can make room for him.
The Flyers could certainly use some depth at right wing, where Nikolai Zherdev and Ian Laperriere are the only regulars who naturally play the right side. Last season, Claude Giroux, Danny Briere and Jeff Carter all took turns playing right wing. Guerin is the only NHL player to have scored 20 or more goals with seven different teams and believes he could give the Flyers the leadership and offensive boost they may need.”
