With the announcement that Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton would be shut down for three weeks came even more ominous news — he would be heading to Alabama to visit Dr James Andrews, and the fear was that the renowned orthopaedic surgeon would soon be performing Tommy John surgery on Blanton’s “cranky” elbow.
Luckily for Blanton, those fears were a false alarm. Dr Andrews confirmed Phillies team physician Dr Michael Cicotti’s initial diagnosis that surgery wouldn’t be necessary, per the Allentown Morning Call.
Even without surgery though, Blanton will likely miss at least a month, likely longer. Hopefully Vance Worley can continue to shine in Blanton’s place.
