DUNEDIN, Fla. — Raul Ibanez went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs as the Phillies roughed up Toronto No. 1 starter Ricky Romero en route to a 5-4 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
Philadelphia did most of its damage with two outs in the top of the first inning. Ben Francisco and Ryan Howard hit back-to-back singles before Ibanez connected on his third home run of the Grapefruit League season. One inning later, shortstop Michael Martinez recorded an RBI double to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead.
Romero finished his four innings with four earned runs on six hits and four strikeouts. It was his first outing since being scratched from his last start with inflammation in his left middle finger.
Left-hander Cliff Lee cruised through his six innings. He allowed two earned runs on four hits while striking out two. His only major blemish came on a 3-0 count to Juan Rivera. Toronto’s right fielder hit the pitch over the wall in left for his second home run and fifth RBI of the spring.
