Something must be in the water. A day after the Phillies and manager Charlie Manuel agreed on a new contract extension, csnphilly.com is reporting that general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is close to signing an extension of his own.
According to sources, Amaro has told people close to him that he has agreed to a new contract.
No details on length or money is known and there is no official confirmation or planned announcement at this time.
Like Manuel, Amaro is in the final year of his contract, a three-year deal signed after the Philles won the World Bleeping Championship in 2008, when the former assistant GM took over the full time gig from Pat Gillick.
More info likely to come soon so stay tuned.
The Phillies have trimmed their roster a bit, assigning a group of players to minor league camp — relievers Justin DeFratus, JC Ramirez, Drew Naylor, infielders Harold Garcia, Cesar Hernandez and Carlos Rivero, and first baseman Matt Rizzotti.
The team also assigned nine non-roster players to minor league camp: righthanders Brian Bass, Eddie Bonine, Andrew Carpenter and Michael Schwimer, first baseman Tagg Bozied, infielder Robb Quinlan, outfielder Matt Miller, and catcher Joel Naughton.
No surprises in either group. The official 25-man roster must be set by Opening Day Eve on March 31.
