Reading Phillies logoA 2-4 week has landed Lehigh Valley second in their division behind the Pawtucket Red Sox.  They’ll return home this week to start a homestand against Buffalo after just splitting a four game series with the Mets affiliate last week.  Domonic Brown sat a game after going hitless in the previous two, but he still collected two more doubles.  Derrick Mitchell had a four game hitting streak snapped, but not before he hit his first home run of the season and drove in five runs.  Jake Diekman has still not allowed a run this season in 6.2 innings, and he’s had success against lefties and righties alike.  Scott Elarton has only allowed one run in three starts this year.

Reading fell a half game behind New Britain after a 3-2 week.  Darin Ruf continued to be the star of the offense, and he’s done nothing but hit in his minor league career.  He had a five hit game on Tuesday that included his first home run of the season.  Jiwan James missed a couple games, but he’s still having a solid week.  He even has two walks in his last three games.  The so-called Baby Aces have been a little underwhelming, but Trevor May is starting what could be a breakout year.  He has 19 strikeouts and only six walks in 17 innings.  Jonathan Pettibone has been striking out even fewer batters this year, and he needs to show better stuff.

Clearwater only won one game this week as their struggles continued.  They own the league’s worst road record at 1-5, but they lost a chance to improve on that when nearly all of their series at Lakeland was washed away.  Anthony Hewitt made his season debut, and it’s going as poorly as one might expect; in 20 at bats, he has just one single.  He hasn’t walked and has six strikeouts, and this could be the end of the line for him.  Austin Wright continued piling up strikeouts with 10 more on Sunday, but he needs to throw more strikes (eight walks in 16 innings).  Brody Colvin threw six scoreless innings in his first good start of the season.

Lakewood is riding a four game losing streak, and they’re now sitting at 6-10.  They allowed 35 runs in their last three games, and they only scored 12 themselves.  Lino Martinez allowed 12 runs himself in his 3.1 inning start on Friday, and when they scored nine runs on Thursday, they lost in extra innings.  Gauntlett Eldemire is hitless in his last four games, and even though he’s been walking still, it’s hurting the offense.  Brian Pointer, Aaron Altherr and Maikel Franco have continued their promising starts.
