Phillies blank Braves, 3-0

May 8

“Both the Phillies and the Atlanta Braves turned to spot starters to survive a Saturday night in May, and it is likely the only time that Kyle Kendrick and Julio Teheran will have the same status.

Kendrick, bumped to the bullpen with a rotation that features four aces, annually has one of the lowest strikeout rates in baseball. He was needed when Roy Oswalt went on the disabled list.

Utley comes out swinging in first rehab appearance

May 8

“Showing no signs of any knee problems, Chase Utley batted seven times, all against lefties, during his first extended spring training game in Dunedin.

Utley, who has yet to play this season while recovering from a knee injury, went 5-for-7 with two homers, three singles, two RBI, and three runs scored off a pair of Toronto lefthanders. More impressively, Utley was able to beat out a throw on one of the singles, a good sign that his health is improving.

Hamels may be expensive for Phillies to lock up after 2012

May 8

“Rich Dubee was asked to track the progression of Cole Hamels from confused-but-blessed-with-amazing-talent to refined and assertive ace, and he began with a start in Boston last May.

“The hitters took pitches that were down like they never saw it come out of his hand,” Dubee said.

Ibanez focuses on play, not age

May 8 Camden Courier-Post columnist David Hale:

The ground-rule double snapped an 0-for-35 slump for Ibanez, and helped provide a bit of evidence that the soon-to-be 39-year-old still had some pop left in his bat.
