Phillies beat Mets as trade buzz picks up

July 16 CSN Philly

The all-star break is over and the second half of the season is upon us.  That means two things if recent years are any indication:  The Phillies will likely keep on winning.  And trades could be brewing.  The Phils are the best second-half team in the National League the last six years. They carried a .610 post-all-star break winning percentage into Friday night’s game against the New York Mets and bettered that mark with a 7-2 win at Citi Field.

Report: Phillies are front-runners for Padres relievers Heath Bell or Mike Adams

July 15 Hardball Talk

As further evidence that the Phillies have reached “Yankees of the National League” status and will now be linked to every big-name player being shopped, Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that “they have been considered frontrunner to land a San Diego reliever.”  Heath Bell is the Padres’ closer and biggest name in the bullpen, but setup man Mike Adams might actually be San Diego’s best reliever. And while Bell is an impending free agent making a bunch of money Adams is relatively cheap and under team control for 2012. In other words, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. would be smart to make a play for Adams before he pays a premium for Bell.”

Oswalt hopes to throw off mound soon

July 16 MLB.com

Roy Oswalt, who is on the disabled list for the second time this season with inflammation in his lower back, hopes to throw off a mound sometime next week.  “I’ve thrown twice, pretty well, on flat ground. I’m hoping maybe to get on the mound in Chicago,” said Oswalt, who received two injections that he says have helped.  “I know I don’t have the pain I had, which is great,” he said. “Once I get the strength back in my left leg, I’m good to go. The last time I came back a little too early and never really got my strength back. I tried to pitch through it.

Journey for Phillies prospect Savery full of twists

July 16 CSN Philly

Hours before his second debut for the Triple A Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Thursday at Coca-Cola Park, Joe Savery spent some time casually shagging fly balls and doing a few light stretches. Every once in a while he’d turn to chase down a ball or chat with a teammate, which is all standard in the pregame routine for a pitcher.  But for Savery, batting practice before a game typically meant some cuts in the cage and maybe a few grounders at first base. Every once in a while he’s shagging flies with a purpose, mostly because he was going to be the starting outfielder.  Not anymore.

Phils’ Manuel OK with Bochy; Dubee bites tongue

July 16 CSN Philly

The Phillies have set their rotation for next week’s series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.  Roy Halladay will start the first game of the series on Monday night. Cliff Lee will pitch Tuesday night. Vance Worley will pitch Wednesday’s series finale.  Though the Phillies have not announced their rotation beyond that, Thursday’s off day will allow them to shuffle the rotation so they would be able to use Cole Hamels and either Halladay or Lee in two of their three games against the National League West-leading San Francisco Giants, who visit Citizens Bank Park on July 26-28.
