Phillies sweep Reds to reach best-ever mark

September 2

The Phillies spent nearly a week in Cincinnati, an unusually long time to spend in any city in the middle of a baseball season.  The Phillies flew to Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon to beat Hurricane Irene, which meant they had two days to relax before opening a four-game series against the Reds on Monday at Great American Ball Park. The break didn’t bother them. They swept the Reds, capping the series with a 6-4 victory Thursday, making it Philadelphia’s first four-game sweep in Cincinnati since 1916.  The Phillies improved to 87-46

Four days, four bloody noses.  The big kids from Philadelphia came to town, pummeled the Reds and took their lunch money, then headed to the airport.  The team with baseball’s best record (87-46) beat the Reds 6-4 on Thursday afternoon to complete a four-game sweep. Philadelphia outscored the Reds 21-6 in the series, and swept a four-game series in Cincinnati for the first time since 1916.

A handful of names are mentioned whenever the subject of Phillies MVP comes up.  Shane Victorino, who ranks in the top 10 in the National League in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, is a hot pick.  Ryan Howard, with 30 homers and a league-leading 104 RBIs, has to be in the discussion.  Ryan Madson, a savior at closer, might seriously be in the talk if he hadn’t missed time with injury.
