Not your average start: Halladay beats Jays
When it was over, Roy Halladay could finally tell himself the truth. This was not just another game. Halladay tried to dismiss it as that a week ago when the subject of his long-awaited return to Toronto came up. Over a year had passed since he was traded from the Blue Jays to the Phillies, enough time, he said, that there wouldn’t be any significant emotion when he took the mound in the stadium he called home for more than a decade.
Favorites for top awards at midseason
July 3 Camden Courier-Post:
There’s still another week of games before the All-Star break, but the official halfway point of the season is behind us. So in honor of Game No. 81, let’s go through our midseason award winners. Top AL rookie: Michael Pineda, Mariners. The 22-year-old righty has been a revelation for Seattle, teaming with Felix Hernandez to form one of the best 1-2 combos in the AL. For the season, Pineda is 7-5 with a 2.65 ERA while allowing just 73 hits in 102 innings. Honorable mention: Mark Trumbo, Angels; Eric Hosmer, Royals
Manuel’s phone calls unanswered
July 3 Camden Courier-Post:
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he’s been trying to call San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy to lobby for some of his players whom he feels deserve a spot on the All-Star team. Manuel said Bochy, who is managing the National League, hasn’t answered his calls. But Manuel made it clear that he feels more than a few of his players should be on the team for the July 12 game. The teams will be announced today.
