Phillies win ninth in a row, but Polanco’s hurt

August 7 CSN Philly

Even as they were running their winning streak to a season-best nine games and Cole Hamels was pitching one of his best games of the season Saturday afternoon, the Phillies were forced to deal with a season-long pest.  The injury bug.  All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco appeared to be in significant pain as he gingerly sat down at a table in the clubhouse to eat a snack after the Phillies‘ 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.

Second trip to DL likely for Polanco

August 7 Camden Courier-Post

A week after he came off the disabled list, Placido Polanco could be headed back there.  The Phillies third baseman left Saturday’s game with soreness in his left hip, a problem he said has persisted for more than a month.  “I’ve had it for a while now, and I guess it just got worse, sprinting and running,” Polanco said.  There’s virtually no chance Polanco will be in the lineup today, and general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Polanco will likely have an MRI today or Monday.

Suspension possible for Victorino

August 7 CSN Philly

Based on recent history, there is a pretty good chance that Major League Baseball will hand down suspensions in the wake Friday night’s melee between the Phillies and San Francisco Giants. MLB reviews the umpires’ report and video tape from every on-field incident that results in an ejection. It is likely that MLB officials have already seen video of the incident. Officials are likely to investigate the matter more closely on Monday and Joe Garagiola Jr., MLB’s senior vice president of standards and on-field operations, could hand down suspensions shortly thereafter.

Oswalt places retirement talk on hold

August 7 Camden Courier-Post

When spring training opened, Roy Oswalt openly discussed the idea of retirement. After leaving his June 23 start in St. Louis after two innings, with his back aching and his future in doubt, retirement seemed a very real option.  But as Oswalt prepares today to make his first start in nearly seven weeks, the idea of hanging it up is completely out of his mind.
