Strangely, the only ball to go into the outfield during Thursday night’s game-breaking 11th inning was thrown there by pitcher David Herndon. It was a harmless moment that brought a little levity to a tense game, but symbolic nonetheless. After all, when a pitcher wheels off the mound and fires a bullet toward second base when no one was standing there aside from a player on the Chicago Cubs, it’s a little odd.

With his offense struggling, Charlie Manuel admits there may come a time in the near future when some tough decisions need to be made on personnel. Entering play Thursday night, the Phillies had averaged fewer than four runs per game, and Manuel thinks they’ll need more than that to win a World Series.
