Phillies’ collapse capped by walk-off grand slam

August 20 CSN Philly

Ryan Madson did all the things a closer wants to do when he has a two-run lead going into the ninth inning on Friday night at Nationals Park. He says he felt good, he got ahead in the count and he got two strikes on just about every hitter.  Madson did all those things and he still lost.  The winning blow was a walk-off grand slam on a 3-2 count with two outs in the ninth inning by Ryan Zimmerman to win it for the Nationals, 8-4, but Madson had lost it long before the game-winner sailed over the left-field fence.

Cole Hamels will throw off a mound today, but he’s still likely a week away from getting into a game.  Kyle Kendrick was scheduled to get today’s start – what would have been Hamels’ turn in the rotation – but was forced into action Friday after a lengthy rain delay scrapped Roy Oswalt’s outing.  Hamels will throw what Dubee described as “a light bullpen” session today.  Hamels hasn’t pitched since Aug. 12, when his fastball lacked zip and his shoulder was sore.

Bullpen fresh for stretch run

August 20  CSN Philly

When a team has a group of starting pitchers like the Phillies, it’s easy for the guys that follow them out of the bullpen to get lost in the shuffle. But maybe, thanks to the strength of the starting corps, the Phillies’ ‘pen has come to be the team’s secret weapon.  Certainly the statistics bear out the prowess of the ‘pen. The relievers have posted the fourth-best ERA in the league (3.30) and have saved 37 games out of 40 chances with just one blown save in the ninth inning. Granted, the relievers are last in the league in innings pitched, but that’s a good thing.
