Phillies put Madson on DL, call up Carpenter

June 28 Wilmington News Journal:

The Phillies today put reliever Ryan Madson on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 19 with a right hand contusion. The team has called up right-hander Andrew Carpenter from Lehigh Valley.  Madson is 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA in 31 games this season. He has converted 15 of 16 save opportunities while striking out 34 over 31.0 innings.”

Shades of October as Red Sox hit Philly

June 28 MLB.com columnist Anthony Castrovince:

For all the shock and surprise the 2011 season has already allowed — including, but not limited to, the relevance of the D-backs, Pirates, Nationals, Indians and Mariners, the troubles of the Twins, the Cy Young-type showing of Ryan Vogelsong and a geriatric Jack McKeon taking over in the Florida dugout — one of the easiest preseason assumptions has proven to have merit. Yes, the Red Sox and Phillies, who face each other in a three-game series that begins Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park, are quite good.

Phillies, Red Sox collide

June 28 Camden Courier-Post:

Just a few weeks into spring training, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. sat in the visitors’ dugout in Fort Myers, Fla., and watched the Boston Red Sox take batting practice.  It was Amaro whose team had fallen two wins shy of a third straight trip to the World Series the preceding October. And it was Amaro who made the offseason’s biggest splash with the surprise signing of Cliff Lee to a five-year contract.

Ugly or not, Phillies keep on winning

June 28 Camden Courier-Post:

At least for the moment, Jimmy Rollins is out of the prediction business.  His famed prognostication in 2007 might have paved the way to the Phillies’ first divisional title, and he made some waves this spring by projecting 100 wins for this year’s team. These days, he refuses to get backed into a corner with specifics.  Of course, he finds it hard to resist a little extra confidence.
