Lee voices frustration in being pulled after 4 innings in 5-4 loss to Padres

July 26 Allentown Morning Call

Cliff Lee wanted a chance to redeem himself, a chance to show everyone he could bounce back and hold the Padres to five runs.  And certainly after watching Roy Halladay slam the door on the Padres a day earlier after giving up three runs in four innings — Halladay then retired the final 10 batters he faced — Lee had his heart set on doing much the same Monday.  Then Lee got word in the dugout in the bottom of the fourth inning that he wouldn’t get that chance.

Lidge hoping for more of the same after solid debut

July 26 Allentown Morning Call

Neatly aligned above Brad Lidge’s locker rest hats from the Threshers, Blue Claws and Reading Phillies.  They remind him of how far he’s come.  Each hat represents a step in Lidge’s rehab from a partially torn rotator cuff that finally ended when he was activated Friday.  Only it didn’t seem real to him until he took the mound Monday for the first time this season.

Even as Lidge returns, Phils look for bullpen help

July 26 CSN Philly

An interesting subplot unfolded in the late innings of the Phillies’ 5-4 loss to San Diego on Monday.  Actually there were a couple of them, and they both entered through the bullpen door.  One hundred and one games into the season, Brad Lidge finally pitched for the Phillies. The erstwhile closer threw 11 pitches in navigating a 1-2-3 seventh inning. If he continues that level of efficiency, the Phillies will have added a nice piece to their bullpen for the stretch drive and beyond.

Polanco aims to return by the weekend

July 26 CSN Philly

Placido Polanco, who received two epidural injections in his back last Thursday, is feeling so good that he hopes to start a two-game rehab assignment Thursday in Lehigh Valley, then return to the Phillies’ lineup by the weekend.  “I don’t mind his optimism, but we’ll talk to Charlie [Manuel] and the trainers and see how much time he needs,” said GM Ruben Amaro, Jr.

Phillies have something to prove vs. Giants

July 26 Allentown Morning Call columnist Tom Housenick

Shane Victorino didn’t warm up to the questions about the Phillies’ three-game series with the Giants that starts Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park.  The center fielder wanted no part of it being a revenge series or a more meaningful one than any other, including the recently completed four-gamer against the visiting Padres.  “That’s what they said about the Red Sox series,” Victorino said before Monday’s 5-4 loss to the Padres. “That doesn’t mean anything in October. It’s this series. It’s about going out there and winning. I don’t care how we do it. We just need to win. That’s the bottom line.

Cody Ross returns to Philadelphia, awaits Phillies fans’ barbs

July 26 San Jose Mercury News

Cody Ross can’t wait to get to Citizens Bank Park, despite knowing that a firestorm of foul epithets surely awaits him in the City of Brotherly Love.  “I definitely won’t be leaving my hotel room much, that’s for sure,” Ross said. “I’ll be getting a lot of room service.”  On Tuesday, Ross will make his first Philadelphia appearance since October, when he spearheaded the Giants’ six-game triumph over the two-time National League champions and won NLCS MVP honors. For the series, Ross hit .350 with three doubles and three homers — two coming against Phillies ace Roy Halladay in the opener at Citizens Bank.
