Lots of folks have wondered why the Phillies have lugged Michael Martinez on their roster all season. Lately, the 28-year-old utility man is showing why. Martinez was the ultimate difference maker in one of the best wins of the season Tuesday night. His RBI double to right with two outs in the top of the ninth brought the Phillies all the way back from the dead and propelled them to a 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs in front of almost as many Phillies fans as Cubs fans at Wrigley Field.

For the first time in 26 days, the fourth Philadelphia Phillies ace, Roy Oswalt, stepped onto a mound and pitched. Oswalt threw about 50 pitches before the Phillies played the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. He reported no problems or discomfort in his lower back, which forced him to the disabled list in late June. “I actually felt great,” Oswalt said after his bullpen session. “Probably felt as good as I did in spring training.”

For three innings Monday, Roy Halladay thought he could push through the heat and humidity. After the fourth, he hoped he could make it a few more frames. Just a few pitches into the fifth inning, however, he just wanted to leave the field under his own power. “I felt like I could get through it, and then in the last inning it was just the point where I felt like I was about to get wheeled off the mound,” Halladay said Tuesday. It was a scary scene as Halladay repeatedly hunched over on the mound gasping for breath and dripping with sweat.
