Cool-hand Worley, hot-bat Rollins lead Phils’ win

July 21 CSN Philly

There’s a room in the tunnel behind the visiting dugout at Wrigley Field that is used for storage. In the postseason, it has been used as an interview room. On Wednesday, it became Lourdes for Phillies pitcher Vance Worley.  You might have heard that a heat wave has engulfed the Midwest this week. It’s headed to the East Coast just in time for the Phillies to open a 10-game homestand Friday night. Triple-digit temperatures, they say.

Source: Mets will not rule out Beltran trade to Phillies or Braves, despite being in NL East

July 21 New York Daily News

While opposing scouts have been circling Citi Field like vultures the past two days to get a look at on-the-block star Carlos Beltran and other available Mets, GM Sandy Alderson similarly has dispatched his top talent evaluators to scout potential returning players before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.  For instance, assistant GM J.P. Ricciardi was in Portland, Maine, on Tuesday night watching the Binghamton Mets face off against Boston’s Double-A affiliate.

Antonio Bastardo could keep spot as Phillies closer

July 21 SportingNews.com

Antonio Bastardo may hold onto the closer’s role with the Philadelphia Phillies based on comments manager Charlie Manuel made after Wednesday’s game.  “Bastardo might be able to do whatever he wants to do with the way he’s been,” Manuel told Delaware Online.  Bastardo, 25, has been one of the top relievers this year.

Madson sees action; role is uncertain

July 21 Camden Courier-Post

Ryan Madson had probably thrown close to 100 pitches during his three days in Chicago. But until the ninth inning Wednesday, he hadn’t gotten into a game.  He warmed up in the bullpen several times, and it was only in mop-up duty in the series finale that the former and, perhaps, soon-to-be closer saw action, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the Phillies’ 9-1 win over the Cubs.

Does Philadelphia Phillies’ Chase Utley ever do anything wrong?

July 21 LehighValleyLive.com

Before his huge two-run, game-tying double in the eighth inning Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs, Chase Utley was hitless in his previous 15 at-bats.  And following the Philadelphia Phillies’ victory over the Cubs on Wednesday, Utley has only four home runs and 22 RBIs in 178 at-bats this season. That is only six more RBIs than Michael Martinez, who has 72 at-bats less than Utley on the year.
