Well, the Phillies may not have a shortstop or an everyday leftfielder but they should have a decent bench. In addition to Jim Thome and Ty Wiggington, the Phillies have now added free agent Laynce Nix, per Jim Salisbury.
It’s a two-year deal though the money isn’t known yet. It’s likely not too much.
Nix, 30, is a career .244 hitter who can’t hit lefties or get on base but he has some pop. In 2011, he hit .250 with 16 home runs and 44 RBIs in 324 at-bats.
Nix should be a decent bench player, and the signing doesn’t necessarily mean that the Phils won’t still bring in a guy like Michael Cuddyer, who they reportedly have an offer on the table for.
What it does mean is that general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.’s stated intention of keeping Domonic Brown in Triple-AAA for another season is likely going to come to pass.
It also means Ben Francisco’s days as a Phillie are likely numbered.
